About the role
As the Media & Public Relations Lead, you will play a critical role in shaping and amplifying BCT’s brand through strategic earned media and PR initiatives to enhance brand visibility and reputation. Reporting to the Communications Manager, you will drive media engagement, craft compelling narratives, and elevate awareness of BCT’s research and impact. This is a senior role where you will work closely with stakeholders across the organisation, particularly researchers, our Chief Executive Officer, supporters and individuals with breast cancer.
Key Responsibilities:
Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists and media outlets to ensure positive coverage and maintain a media database. Monitor and report on media coverage and identify new opportunities.
Develop and maintain knowledge of potential BCT spokespeople and their areas of expertise to deploy as relevant, plus develop talking points for interviews.
Write and distribute press releases, media statements, including press kits and key communications and act as the primary contact for media enquiries, interviews, and press opportunities.
Coordinate PR events, press conferences, and promotional campaigns.
Collaborate with all departments at BCT, to promote campaigns, our research achievements and our impact on the lives of our beneficiaries.
Manage an ambassador and influencer database to enhance advocacy efforts.
Write grant applications which support the activities of BCT.
About you
We are looking for an experienced and passionate media and PR professional with a strong track record of securing earned media. You thrive in a collaborative and purpose driven environment, are a natural storyteller, and have an excellent ability to translate complex topics into compelling narratives.
In addition you will possess:
Minimum of five years’ experience in public relations and media management.
Ideally you will have a strong media network nationally with established relationships across traditional and digital platforms. Current New Zealand knowledge or experience is highly regarded.
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with a high level of organisation, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality work with outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
Experience across PR activities including earned, influencer, activations, events, and attendance at media calls and shoots.
Ability to show genuine empathy, sensitivity and diplomacy while working with a range of stakeholders, such as Board Directors, senior staff, researchers, people with breast cancer and supporters.
Tertiary qualification in media, journalism, communications, or public relations or equivalent experience.
