The organisation

Located in the thriving NSW regional city of Tamworth, Challenge Community Services employs over 1000 employees across 100+ locations in NSW and Queensland. Challenge provides disability services, foster care, therapeutic services and supported employment and aim to create a world where everyone belongs and everyone grows!

The role

The role of Financial Controller, reporting to the General Manager of Finance, is a great opportunity for an experienced Senior Financial Accountant or a Financial Controller to transition to an organisation that really does make a difference to the lives of people in the community.
The position is a wonderful mix of continuing to ‘roll your sleeves up’ in financial and management accounting procedures on a daily, monthly and annual basis, as well as leading business improvement projects relating to financial management across the organisation.  As Financial Controller you will support and develop the small finance team based in Tamworth.  The position is offered on a fulltime basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monthly accruals, fixed assets, prepayments, and other GL reconciliations

  • Preparation of monthly profit and loss statements and balance sheet as well as BAS lodgements

  • Coordinate and compile monthly and other periodic financial and performance reporting for distribution to the Board, Executive Team and Managers including P&L, balance sheets, cash flows, KPIs, trend and variance analysis

  • Preparation of annual budgets and conduct quarterly reviews

  • The preparation of year-end audit work papers & financial statements

  • Preparation of acquittals for grant funding

  • Provide support and ongoing development to the finance team

 Your experience

The position will best suit an individual who has developed their career to date into senior financial accounting responsibilities or possibly a few years into the role of Financial Controller already.  Other areas of essential criteria include:

  • A degree in Accounting, preferably CA/CPA qualified or near completion

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Exceptional organisational skills and high attention to detail in all that you do

  • A strong aptitude for IT systems and software, particularly MS Excel

  • An ability to recognise where business improvement can be made to procedures and the proactiveness to make it happen

  • A passion for understanding the business to be able to identify how you can introduce new practices that suit the needs of the organisation

Previous experience working in the non-for-profit sector and/or an in-depth knowledge of the NDIS would be an advantage, but not essential.

How to apply

Challenge will be offering a competitive remuneration package including access to salary packaging tax advantages.  The organisation supports work life balance, with flexible working hours, and an opportunity to negotiate additional annual leave of up to 4 weeks per annum.
