Job Description
Strategic influence on growth, supply chain and offshore operations
Drive margin, DIFOT and productivity through modern manufacturing
Full safety, financial and performance accountability across multi-site manufacturing operations
Based in Newcastle, this role plays a key role in driving operational performance and supporting the business’s next phase of growth.
About the company
Ampcontrol is a long-established Australian industrial organisation delivering complex engineering, manufacturing and electrical solutions across energy, resources and infrastructure markets.
With its largest manufacturing footprint based in Newcastle and the Hunter Region, and a growing international presence, the business is entering an important next phase of operational and strategic growth.
Ampcontrol is seeking an Executive General Manager – Operations to lead safety, people, performance and operational transformation across its operations portfolio.
Reporting to the CEO, this is a critical executive leadership role with accountability for the end-to-end performance of the operations businesses, including full financial responsibility. The role requires a leader who is equally comfortable on the shop floor and in the boardroom, with the credibility to lead large, technically skilled teams and the commercial acumen to drive sustainable performance.
The position is primarily based in Newcastle, where the majority of Ampcontrol’s operational workforce and manufacturing capability is located. This role requires a strong on-site presence, with interstate and occasional international travel.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Lead multi-site manufacturing and engineered project operations, ensuring safe, efficient and high-quality delivery
Own operational financial performance, capital investment and cost control
Drive operational excellence, industrialisation and continuous improvement programs
Lift DIFOT, productivity, margin and throughput across the value chain
Embed a strong safety-first, performance-driven culture aligned to Ampcontrol values
Shape and execute operational strategy aligned to the group’s growth ambitions
Actively contributing to the senior leadership team function to drive optimal organisational strategy, structure, culture and performance
Operating Environment
Ampcontrol operates across two core business models:
Engineer-to-Order (ETO) environments where technology, design and project execution are critical
Standard product/volume manufacturing environments where rhythm, repeatability and efficiency are key
Candidates may come from either background; however, the ability to adapt across both models within digitally enabled, data-driven environments is essential.
About you
This role is suited to an expert manufacturing/industrial operations executive leader. You will bring:
Senior leadership experience in industrial manufacturing or OEM environments
Backgrounds in heavy industry, mining equipment, electrical/electronic/mechanical manufacturing or discrete manufacturing
Proven success leading lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and operational transformation
Strong capability across complex, multi-site and global supply chains
Experience with offshore manufacturing, with China or similar markets highly regarded
A visible, hands-on leadership style with strong cultural and people leadership capability
A strategic mindset with an inherent understanding of project delivery and customer value chains
Demonstrated ability to grow and develop the capability of your teams
Experience in electrical or power solutions is desirable but not essential.
Qualifications
Engineering qualification (Diploma or higher)
Lean, Six Sigma or Operational Excellence credentials
Postgraduate qualifications (MBA or similar)
Location
This role is based in Newcastle, reflecting the scale and importance of the Hunter Region operations. Candidates must be willing to be locally present and highly visible across manufacturing sites.
This is a rare opportunity to step into a senior executive role with genuine scale, complexity and impact, leading one of Australia’s most significant industrial operations through its next chapter of growth and transformation.
