Job Description

  • Lead the organisation through an exciting period of growth and expansion

  • Inspire and empower a passionate team delivering vital services to children and families

  • Guide strategy and sustainability for a respected community organisation

Lead a respected, values-driven organisation supporting children and families across the Newcastle region.

Family Support Newcastle (FSN) has been supporting families for more than 45 years. With a strong reputation in the community services sector, FSN delivers a range of programs including domestic and family violence support, therapeutic groups, fathering programs and family wellbeing services.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader to guide the organisation through an exciting period of growth and expansion.

Reporting to the Board, the Chief Executive Officer will provide inspirational leadership, ensure strong governance and financial stewardship, and foster a culture grounded in participation and social justice. This is a unique opportunity to lead a purpose-driven organisation that is deeply embedded in the Newcastle community. Working closely with an engaged Board and experienced leadership team, you will:

  • Provide strategic leadership aligned to FSN’s mission, vision and values, guiding the organisation’s direction and ensuring services continue to respond to the evolving needs of children, families and the wider community.

  • Ensure strong governance, compliance and funding accountability, working closely with the Board to maintain best-practice governance and meet regulatory and funding requirements.

  • Lead financial oversight, budgeting and sustainability planning, ensuring the organisation remains financially strong and well positioned for the future.

  • Support and inspire a committed team delivering high-quality services, fostering a positive, values-driven culture where staff feel supported, engaged and empowered to deliver meaningful outcomes for families.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with government, community and sector stakeholders, strengthening FSN’s presence and reputation while advocating for the needs of families and children across the region.

  • Identify strategic growth opportunities and secure ongoing funding, including grants, partnerships and new program opportunities, to strengthen FSN’s impact and ensure the long-term viability of its services.

About You

You are a passionate and people-focused community services leader who is motivated by making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families. You bring strong leadership capability, sound judgement and a collaborative approach to supporting teams and communities to thrive.

This role may suit an experienced CEO who has led a similar-sized organisation, or a senior leader within a community services organisation who is ready to step into their first CEO role and is motivated by the opportunity to lead a respected community-based organisation.

In addition we are looking for:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience within the community services sector, either as a CEO or in a senior leadership role.

  • Strong financial acumen and governance experience, ideally including reporting to or working closely with a Board.

  • The ability to inspire, mentor and develop teams while fostering a positive, values-driven culture.

  • Experience in contract management and meeting government funding and compliance requirements.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to build partnerships and support organisational growth

  • Relevant graduate or post-graduate qualifications in a related discipline

You will also demonstrate cultural capability and a genuine commitment to working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, as well as a strong belief in social justice, inclusion and equity.
