Help to shape the future of one of the region's largest and most diverse organisations in a trusted in-house legal role offering flexibility, autonomy and genuine strategic influence.

  • Rare part-time opportunity.

  • Provide expert legal advice across commercial, governance, compliance and property matters.

  • Partner with senior leaders and the Board.

About the opportunity

We have a unique opportunity for an experienced legal professional to join The Wests Group Australia as their trusted Legal Counsel. Offered on a part-time basis (3 days per week), this role is ideal for someone seeking meaningful, high-level work while maintaining flexibility for other professional or personal commitments.

As the sole in-house Legal Counsel, you will work closely with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team, providing practical, commercially focused legal advice across a diverse and dynamic organisation. This is a rare opportunity to establish yourself as a trusted advisor, influence strategic decision-making and contribute to the ongoing success of one of the region's leading employers.
Key areas of focus include:

  • Provide expert legal advice across commercial, governance, compliance and property matters.

  • Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of contracts, supplier agreements and procurement documentation.

  • Partner with senior leaders and the Board to support governance, regulatory compliance and strategic initiatives.

  • Negotiate commercial contracts, advising on marketing and promotional activities.

  • Manage property-related legal matters.

  • Act as the primary conduit between the organisation and external legal advisers, briefing, coordinating and managing legal matters to ensure timely, commercially focused outcomes.

About Wests Group

The Wests Group Australia is one of the largest employers in the Newcastle, Port Stephens and Lake Macquarie regions, employing over 1,000 people across a diverse portfolio of entertainment, hospitality and community-focused businesses.

Our operations include registered clubs, hotels, conference and event facilities, fitness centres and the Newcastle Knights. They are proud to be one of the region's great success stories, built on a strong commitment to their people, members and communities.

As a not-for-profit organisation, community is at the heart of everything they do. They are dedicated to creating exceptional experiences while fostering a supportive, inclusive and professional workplace where employees can thrive.

About You

You are a commercially astute legal professional who enjoys working autonomously while building strong relationships across an organisation. You bring sound judgement, a practical approach to problem-solving and the confidence to provide advice at both operational and strategic levels.
To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A current practising certificate and a minimum of 5 years' post-qualification experience.

  • Experience in commercial law gained in private practice, in-house, or a combination of both.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence and build trusted relationships across all levels of the business.

  • You will also be commercially minded, solutions-focused and comfortable operating as a standalone legal function supporting a complex and diverse organisation.

This is an opportunity to join an organisation that genuinely invests in its people, as well as offering excellent benefits and a focus on career development. If you are looking for a flexible, influential in-house legal role where your expertise will make a genuine impact, we would love to hear from you.
